World War I
1914–1918Allies: France, British Empire, Russia, Italy, United States
VictoryCentral Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria
A crisis after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 pulled the great powers of Europe into war. On the Western Front, armies dug in from the Channel to Switzerland; the Eastern Front, Gallipoli and the Middle East followed. Machine guns, rapid-fire rifles, artillery, gas and the first tanks killed some 9 million soldiers.
Outcome: Allied victory. Four empires fell (German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian) and the Treaty of Versailles redrew the map of Europe.
