Iran–Iraq War

1980–1988

Iraq

Iran

Iraq invaded Iran in September 1980, hoping for a quick victory after the Iranian revolution. The war turned into eight years of trench fighting, human-wave attacks, chemical weapons and strikes on cities and oil tankers, and became one of the deadliest conflicts of the late 20th century.

Outcome: Stalemate. A UN-brokered ceasefire in 1988 restored the pre-war border.
