Vietnam War

1955–1975

North Vietnam and the Viet Cong

Victory

South Vietnam, United States and allies

North Vietnam and the Viet Cong fought to unite the country against South Vietnam and, from 1965, a large American force. The jungle war set the AK-47 against the M16 and made helicopters, ambushes and tunnels its symbols. The United States withdrew in 1973 after the Paris Peace Accords.

Outcome: North Vietnamese victory: Saigon fell in April 1975 and Vietnam was reunified in 1976.
